     Community Development - DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Domestic violence refers to the aggression and brutality that happens within families and relationships among people who are supposed to love and care for each other, and to have a social and moral responsibility to protect and provide for each other.

Domestic violence is a grievous evil that shatters lives and disintegrates families and communities. The Domestic Violence Act 116 of 1998 is one of several tools that the government is using to eradicate domestic violence in South Africa.

FAMSA addresses domestic and community violence through the following services:

  • Awareness and Prevention Programmes for Adults, Youth, Parents and various community groups.
  • Life skills development programmes focussing on communications, conflict management and resolution, mediation and assertiveness.
  • Courses on stress management, assertiveness, dealing with depression, managing loss and emotions of aggression including anger and dealing with violent situations.
  • Therapeutic groups
  • Counselling for victims of violence and rape
  • Education, counselling and support for perpetrators of violence.
  • Trauma counselling for individuals and groups.
