     Education - LIFE SKILLS FOR TEENAGERS

 
WHAT IS EDUCATION FOR LIVING ?

Education for Living is a programme aimed at promoting healthy family and peer relationships.

FAMSA believes that providing adolescents with relationship skills will prevent difficulties both in the present and in the future.

WHO OFFERS THE PROGRAMME ?

The Programme is offered by trained staff and volunteers selected for their ability to work with adolescents and issues relevant to this stage of development. They receive ongoing inservice training and supervision.

HOW DOES IT WORK ?

The course is presented to groups of children during school time. The course runs over four to six sessions, each session is between thirty and sixty minutes. The time frame is negotiable according to the needs of the children, the school or institution.

THE FACILITATOR'S ROLE

In the groups students are encouraged to participate in discussions and exercises about a range of issues. The goal is to enable and empower them to understand and cope with interpersonal relationships, sexuality and the adolescent phase of life.

The students are helped to feel understood and feel free to participate in a safe and non-threatening environment.

The facilitators are aware that different communities have different beliefs about adolescent relationships and sexuality. They offer the programme in a value free way and avoid imposing their beliefs on the students.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAMME ?

The aim of the group is to develop skills and awareness in young people about interpersonal relationships.

FOR WHOM IS THE PROGRAMME ?

It is offered to schools, training institutions, and children's' homes.

WHAT IS DISCUSSED ?

Self-awareness - who am I and what do I believe is important in my life ? Peer relationships - choosing friends and coping with peer pressure. Family relationships - who am I in my family and how can we sort out conflicts ? Sexuality - male and female sexual development, menstruation, pregnancy, conception, contraception and sexually transmitted diseases. Communication - how do I make myself clearly understood ? Problem solving - how do I sort out conflicts with my friends and families ?

CONCLUSION

Education for Living aims to address the needs of normal adolescent development. It is a preventive programme that aims to promote healthy relationships.
